Last March 13 to 23, 2015, The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration - Regional Welfare Office IV-B brought its programs and services to the island municipalities of Dumaran, Araceli, Bataraza, Balabac and the City of Puerto Princesa as part of its intense drive to serve remote areas, and to promote legal overseas employment and the benefits of being an OWWA member.
For years, the island municipalities of Dumaran, Bataraza and Balabac served as the backdoor of illegal migrant workers to and from neighboring Asian countries which increases the risks of the migrant workers to be abused and exploited without government protection. Reachable by an hour of air flight, four hours of land travel, and three hours of boat ride from the country’s capital, OWWA broke this challenge in its commitment to deliver quality programs and services to the OFW communities.
Through his initiative, Director Allan A. Ignacio of OWWA Regional Welfare Office IV-B said that “this milestone activity will help curtail the cases of undocumented migrant workers through making OWWA visible and available to them, provide them of OWWA’s programs and services they need, and induce sustainable development in their communities”.
Mr. Rome Frias, Ms. Luisa Remo, and Ms. Adignita Elijan of OWWA oriented the communities of the programs and services of OWWA and conducted Entrepreneurship Development Trainings to OFW Family Circles established in the municipalities. This will bring the OWWA’s programs and services closer to the community and also further their involvement in their economic development.
Enjoined by the inter-agency teams from Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), National Reintegration Center for OFWs (NRCO), Public Employment Service Office (PESO) of the municipalities and the Local Government Units, OWWA also engaged with consultative meetings with the municipality leaders and discussed issues regarding the cases of undocumented workers and possible solutions.
The communities were very thankful for making the government services available for them. Notwithstanding heat or rain, OWWA will continue to deliver its quality programs and services for the OFW and their communities through sea, air, and land. END/Jan Erwin Reyes
